Supernatural : Angel Castiel or Angel Casstiel, Who is He & What is His Purpose?

Last week's episode of Supernatural revealed some info as to what Angel Castiel's purpose in saving Dean from hell. Could it be true? We're pretty excited about what's going to happen this season. One of the major reasons is the introduction of Angel Castiel.

After watching that episode, we immediately looked for information on Angel Castiel. We didn't really find anything valuable until today (read on). Anyway, we weren't the only ones looking for more information on this very intriguing character, played by Misha Collins of 24.

I noticed in the past week that I've been getting major traffic boost because of my previous Supernatural post. Many fans of the show are so interested with this Angel Castiel / Casstiel character that they googled for more info. I was # 1 on the Google's SERP for the search strings "angel casstiel" and "supernatural casstiel". (Wow, SEO) (I got the spelling from IMDB but now I'll stick to Castiel since almost everyone is spelling his name that way)

And because of this, I decided to research and write something about Angel Castiel / Casstiel.

First, the name. Is there really an angel named Castiel? YES, actually there is... well, at least in the old Tarot card deck. Castiel is an Angel of Thursday and he will help anyone born on this day or anyone who asks for help on this day. Further description of Angel Castiel can be found at Angels365:

"The Angel can help us if there are changes in our life which may involve a lot of traveling or moving to a new country and we need guidance."

He is the Angel of new changes and travel.

I don't know why they named the angel as Castiel. Was Dean born on a Thursday? LOLz! That was funny. But, that might be true, considering that they might have chosen that name for this character since he's going to help Dean.

Misha Collins is doing a great job as Angel Castiel / Casstiel. He's got a huge fanbase now with just a single appearance in Supernatural's first episode.

I read TV Guide's interview with him and Misha said that he actually auditioned for a demon role. Eric Kripke (Writer-Producer of Supernatural) told him he's actually an angel and gave him pointers on what he's looking for and Misha got the part. Read the full interview here.

I like how he explains to Dean why he was pulled out from hell, why him. Castiel said that because God commanded it, and He's got work for him.

In last week's episode, Castiel brought Dean back to the past, when they weren't conceived yet. I thought it was to stop Sam from being born but I was wrong. Castiel only did it to show Dean what really happened and why her mom was killed by the yellow-eyed demon.

We're suspecting that Dean's "task" is to stop Sam. Remember, the yellow-eyed demon had plans for Sam? Now, God has plans for Dean. So, how all these is going to pan out will be pretty interesting.

Oh, I heard they're introducing another Angel, Uriel. He is one of the 4 main Archangels and very powerful, according to Angel365. Wow, that makes this season better than ever.

Can't wait for this week's episode!

Uriel, is an Archangel of the Light, prophecy and insight and a powerful angel of trasformation. Nothing in the series depicts his real self. He's not as arrogant as they showed him on the series. It saddens me to know they changed his image in the show.

  2. I agree with you. I was kinda disappointed to see who played Uriel and what kind of character he was on the show. However, I believe that's their point - to change our views on angels and demons or to attempt to do so.
I'm looking forward to seeing Gabriel hehe.

Castiel isn't the Angel of Temperance, Cassiel is. I think the writer may have used the background for Cassiel (one of the archangels)but used Castiel as his name. In the Uriel episode Castiel tells him "Enough!" when continuing with the original plan to destroy the entire city. No sinple Angel of Thursday is given authority to shush an Archangel, if you're following the Judeo-Christian mythology.

Just something I wanted to point out.

  4. hmmm.. that's a pretty good angle. i actually just researched and wrote about this 'coz i was curious if there's an angel named Castiel. and there was. and i don't really think they were following the mythology or anything for that matter as they already twisted the story in different angles.

but thanks for the info. :)
