I can count using only my fingers the few times I received flowers as gifts from friends and past lovers. Not that they’re not thoughtful or anything, but they are very aware of the fact that I don’t like flowers.
Okay, we’ve got flowers in our garden. I do like roses, tulips and carnations in particular. But, I just don’t enjoy receiving them as gifts. I’ve always preferred to give and receive personalized gifts. I feel like flowers are what you’d usually give to someone when you can’t think of anything to give them. Plus, they’re not everlasting.
HOWEVER, though I don’t like receiving them, the few times I did in this lifetime, I truly appreciated. Here’s a photo of one of the most memorable flowers I received:
What made these flowers special is the story behind the whole giving thing. This ex-lover woke up really early, sneaked out while I was fast asleep, and bought me these flowers. We were always together so my lover had to figure out how to buy me something special without me noticing. I was touched as the flowers even came with my favorite breakfast – pancakes. ^_^
As much as I’d want to share more about what happened with our relationship, I’d rather not. All I can say is this - it was one of the great
I guess it was really the effort behind the thought of giving me these roses that touched me. And it’s always been the case with the rest of my lovers and friends who gave me flowers. It’s not all about how expensive they were, how huge the arrangement was. It’s all about the story or why they’re giving me the flowers that matter to me. But, of course, I prefer to receive tulips, roses or carnations. And I would definitely appreciate if they exert real effort on how they send or give me the flowers, like maybe have something like EZBloomers.com custom flower delivery to send them my way. With singing delivery guy perhaps. That’ll be uber sweet. ^_^
Kidding aside, I’d like to share this story. One of the most heartbreaking, and probably had the most impact on me, was when one of my past lovers gave me a dried rose petal a week after we broke up. I never told anyone about this ‘cause whenever I think about it just breaks my heart. He’s the one that got away, I guess. *sigh*
Anyway, why did he give me that rose petal? He said he was supposed to give me a red rose on our first month as a couple. The night before, we were telling each other some random things about ourselves, and I blatantly told him I don’t like flowers.
He bought the flowers that same night ‘cause we were meeting at our house early the next day and he was afraid he won’t find a decent flower shop to buy me a rose. When he learned about what I think of flowers as gifts, he decided to keep the rose petals in one of his thick engineering books and let them dry out. He told himself he’ll give them to me when we break up, symbolizing that our love’s gone, too.
Fast forward 3 months, we broke up. He let another week pass just to make sure we won’t be getting back together. And when I said it’s final, he went to my school the next day and begged for 5 minutes to talk with me. I decided to have one last dinner with him and that’s when he handed me that all dried out rose petal and explained to me, in tears, that he kept that flower since our first month together. And I felt tears starting to stream down my face. But, I didn’t want that gesture from him to change my mind. It was a very complicated relationship. And we haven’t talked since that night, but I kept that rose petal for years.
It was him who made me like receiving flowers a little. But, still, whenever I receive flowers, I ask the giver why he or she chose them as gift. *LOL* What a killjoy, eh?
Anyway, I still stick with my preference for personalized gifts. But, receiving flowers give me that tingly feeling reminding me that I’m still a lady and should be treated like a queen. ^_^
Anyway, my favorite flowers are still tulips. How about you? And what are the most memorable flowers you’ve received? :)
