Though I took up Computer Engineering back in college, I found my true passion in website design. I guess it has something to do with the speed of getting results, and that I’m truly a more visual person. I love that with web design, you can quickly view the product of your hard work without having to write blocks of programming codes just to display “Hello World” on the screen. If you took a programming class, you’d probably know what I’m talking about. ^_^
I remember back when I was 19 years old when I first started to learn about HTML, I took on the challenge of creating a website for a chat channel I owned. It was a very simple website and people cannot believe that I only used my limited skills in Adobe Photoshop and Notepad to create it. Yes, I did not use any web design software. It was pure HTML knowledge that brought about that website (Oh, how I wish I kept a screenshot of that website!).
Soon after that, I designed intranet websites for companies I worked for. Take note though that I wasn’t part of the IT department. I only did it for kicks and didn’t get paid a single cent for any of it. The first intranet site I did was for the department I was part of. Eventually, it became the whole program’s information site. Thankfully, I have a screenshot of that website that I was able to upload to my DeviantArt page (which reminds me that I have to update that too).
And, again, I did that using only my HTML knowledge and a bit of improved Photoshop skills. Cool, eh? ^_^
I designed a couple more websites for friends before I eventually got my first professional web design project. It was pretty fun and so I was determined to pursue becoming a web designer.
With a lot of web design tools now available to us, I can’t help but feel overwhelmed, in a VERY good way, as a web designer. I can now come up with cool designs without having to rely on my programming or coding skills too much, which only means one thing – I can whip up a whole website quicker and my clients get their business website up and running in no time. Now, I can focus more on honing my graphics design skills. :)
Did you know that if you want to be in full control of the ways you can build your own website or you don’t want to entrust the whole design process to someone else, there are online services that offer you a way to do that with limited or even non-existent HTML knowledge? There are also CMS platforms like Wordpress and Joomla that can aid you in building your own website, but it may take more effort and coding knowledge in your part to actually make your website more functional to fit your own needs.
This year, I have designed 4 websites in total, one of which is still a work in progress. This current project will have a mini online store, something I haven’t done before so I’m glad I get to practice now so I can use it for my upcoming web design projects.
Hopefully, before the year ends, my next web design project officially starts. I’m quite excited about it because it’s food-related, something most of you who read my blogs already know I’m also passionate about. :)
Oh, and by next year, I’m hoping to start my own online store. I have talked about it in my past posts and I hope it’ll be a successful venture as well. Also, I’m building my portfolio as a web designer and will be offering my services by early next year. Wish me luck, please? :)
Have you designed your own website yet? Please share your experience in the comments section. :)
This post is in line with a blog campaign from Bucks2Blog for a website design software company. I was compensated, but this post and all my views are my own.
