Conficker Virus Hype - April 1 attack - Should You Be Scared?

What's up with all this hype about the Conficker Virus attack tomorrow, April 1st? I've read and heard about people scared about this April Fools' day attack and the media hyping this all up is crazy! People are now scared of turning on their computers and connecting to the internet the whole day tomorrow.

News and informational sites about the Conficker Virus claim that there are about 10 million computers affected worldwide from the previous "attack". I doubt mine's even included considering this is brand new and I just reformatted it. So, if you're gonna ask me, I'm not scared about this at all.

If you're using your computer for personal use and you only download from trusted sites, don't be scared. If you're using a genuine Windows and are receiving updates from Microsoft, don't be afraid. If your anti-virus and security software are all updated, no need to worry.

Alright, just reading the last paragraph makes me think that this was all an April Fools' day trick from these software companies. I remember the millenium bug. People were fearing the worst but did anything actually happen when the clock struck 12 midnight and the start of year 2000? C'mon now.

Just relax, people. For the sake of playing it safe, clean out your history, passwords, etc., on your browser and computer. Like always, download only from trusted sites. Make sure your anti-virus software is updated and you should be okay.

If you're a Mac or Linux user, no need to worry. The Conficker virus was designed to exploit weaknesses in Microsoft's Operating system. And from what I've read, those that are affected by the virus might only get some kind of instruction or message from "home" (creators) and won't be that drastic. They're scaring the hell out of those people who are using pirated versions of Windows. Hmmm... fishy, ain't it?
