Have you watched the first 2 episodes of American Idol Season 9?! Well, if you did, I know there are some of you who'd agree with me that there weren't enough talent in the first 2 cities where American Idol had auditions.
But, before I go on, I wanted to mention that it was pretty mean that the introduction to Season 9 was more in favor of Adam Lambert - "Another Idol was crowned (Kris Allen). A new star was born. (Adam Lambert)". It's like the title of American Idol wasn't that important. Well, I've mentioned before that Adam Lambert should've won hands down because it was a singing talent show, but, hey, that's already in the past.
Anyway, going back to American Idol Season 9, I was pretty psyched to know Ellen DeGeneres would be replacing Paula Abdul as a permanent judge. Too bad I have to endure more face time from Kara and some of the guest judges during the auditions before actually seeing Ellen on the show.
FIRST STOP: BOSTON
Victoria Beckham of Spice Girls and wife to David Beckham was the guest judge. I was pretty bored with her because she wasn't really a good judge. She's not really saying anything helpful. I guess she didn't want to offend anyone. Oh well.
It was raining but there were still thousands who auditioned. Here are my faves among those who got yellow tickets to Hollywood:
Maddy Curtis - Bluemont, VA - 16 years old - studentI liked her because she seems confident and I love her rendition of Hallelujah. She seems genuinely nice and mature, I guess because she takes care of 4 younger brothers who have Down syndrome. I hope she does well in the competition. Might need to work on the personality part, though. Still, might be a contender for the Top 20.
Amadeo Diricco - Johnston, RI - 28 yrs old - bartender He's got a very big, powerful voice. Fits his personality... and his appearance, too. He's an Italian and I love that his family's very close. And, they love food, too! His audition song wasn't that good, for me, though.
I hope he'd have better song choices in Hollywood.
Benjamin Bright - Rome, NY - 25 yrs old - music teacher His voice reminded me of David Archuleta. Very soft, cool voice. Love him! And his song choice, too.
He looks kinda Pinoy to me. Hmmm... might do some research on him if he makes it to the Top 20.
Ashley Rodriguez - Boston, MA - 21 yrs old - student She sang Alicia Key's "If I Ain't Got You" and, damn, she was gooooooodd! She's also pretty and seems to be very confident. I really hope she'd make it to the Top 20 'coz I LOVE her voice. And, yes, that Alicia Keys song was hard to sing but she made it her own and it was beautiful! Gosh. Can't wait to hear her more in Hollywood.
Tyler Grady - Nazareth, PA - 19 yrs old - student Tyler Grady really shocked me the most. Mai and I were always hoping to see a nerdy nerd guy who looks like a loser but has a very powerful voice. And Tyler was a perfect fit! Okay, he's not a complete dork but with his edits, he was acting like one. So, it was a complete surprise when he sang "Let's Get It On" and he was pretty good! He's on top of our faves list. I hope we'd see him in the Top 20 of American Idol Season 9!
Joshua Blaylock - New York, NY - 28 yrs old - Business Dev't Manager It's his last chance to make it to American Idol 'coz of his age. He reminds me of Kris Allen because of his boy-next-door personality. But, Joshua seems to be more likeable, for me, because of his being "nice". The judges told him he needs to work on his personality, be more confident and he said he's willing to learn and be more aggressive. It was pretty funny when Randy told him to practice being aggressive by saying "Simon, shut up!". When he said it, he said "Simon, shut up! Please!" Hahaha. The "please" didn't sound scripted at all, like he was really scared Simon would be pissed. I like him! I hope he does work on his personality so he can make it to the Top 20.
Bosa Mora - Columbus, OH - 22 yrs old - graduate His parents are from Nigeria and Bosa being in American Idol is their family's American dream. Simon didn't like him because he was boring but I liked him because of his song choice and the quality of his voice. He sang George Strait's "You Look So Good". He does need to work on his stage presence so let's see.
SECOND STOP: ATLANTA
Mary J. Blige was the guest judge. She wasn't really that helpful. She was laughing uncontrollably for the most part. Or from what was shown. But, she was a better judge than Victoria Beckham. *Sigh* Need to get better guest judges next time. Anyway, there weren't that much good auditions here but here are my faves:
Keia Johnson - Memphis, TN - 26 yrs old - Marketing rep
I'm hoping she makes it to the Top 20 this season.
Tisha Holland - Riverdale, GA - 18 yrs old - hostess Oh my. I love her voice! She's so R&B, if you know what I mean. And she seems to have a very pleasing personality so I'm hoping she makes it to the Top 20 'coz damn, I love her voice! The judges seem to love her, too!
Jermaine Sellers - Joliet, IL - 26 yrs old - Church singer He sang Joan Osborne's "What If God was One of Us" and he made it his own. Dang! It made me love the song more. He's a church singer and he seems to be very close to his mom. He took care of her since he was 17 so that's why I love him more. He's got this type of personality and voice that would make me vote for him. I really hope he'd make it to the Top 20. He's definitely one of the surprises this first set of auditions.
Those are the only 3 auditions that I loved in Atlanta. But, those 3 were also on the top of my list so this first 2 sets of auditions goes to Atlanta. I watched better singers from them.
I kinda hate it when American Idol edits the contestants' clips during the actual show to feature the struggles they've been through like Danny Gokey's wife passing away, etc. I mean, it kinda affects how the votes go. I know that those struggles affected the lives of the contestants, and might be the reasons why they pursued singing, but, I just don't like it to be the basis for most people to vote for them and not base it on talent. *sigh* Oh well.
Of course, in every American Idol set of auditions, there will always be lame people who think they have the talent to even sing. This is what I don't understand. I mean, I know that we're supposed to love our own but damn, if it will cause humiliation in front of millions of TV viewers, I'd be honest to someone I care about that they're not good enough to even imagine being on the show. I understand why they're putting those auditions in the episodes - for entertainment value. What I don't understand is why parents or friends of those people with funny and lame auditions actually let them go to the audition. I mean, is it their way of making them realize that they didn't really have the talent? To humiliate themselves in front of the American Idol judges? Well, if that's the case, that's just evil. LOL.
But, seriously, if a friend of mine or a loved one tells me they want to audition for a talent show and I KNOW that they're not that good, I will tell them honestly. It'll save them the heartache and humiliation of not getting accepted and people laughing at them because of their audition on the show that was aired to millions of viewers across the country. I know there are people reading this who agree with me.
Can't wait for this week's sets of auditions. I hope there'll be someone who'll be as consistent as Adam Lambert was in Season 8. But, I'm not keeping my hopes up too much 'coz that's gonna be hard to beat him.
I agree with you that Benjamin sounded like Archie. When my daughter and I heard him, that was the first thing we said.
ReplyDeleteYeah. He wasn't featured as much as the others so not sure if he'll make it to the Top 20. He's not as likeable as David Archuleta so I wish him luck.
ReplyDeleteI'm rooting for Maddy, Tyler and Bosa. I'm so glad they gave Bosa a chance. :-)
ReplyDeleteI love Tyler. With Bosa, yeah, we're also glad they gave him a chance. I hope he'd work on his stage presence so he can have a shot of making it to the top 20.
