Last week, Wednesday, Corveena, my laptop (yes, I stuck with the name I gave her *LOL*) got corrupted. A few hours before it all happened, we were in a hurry to pick up my bro from the airport. My mom was yelling at me to rush ‘cause the van we rented for the pickup was already waiting outside. I was restarting my laptop and had to immediately turn it off while Windows XP was still loading. I knew it’s a no-no to force shutdown a computer while Windows is loading, but I had no choice and just prayed there’ll be no issues when I return.
When I got back, this is the error message that welcomed me:
Well, the operating system got corrupted. I tried to repair it, but it didn’t work. So, I decided to fix it the next day. After a few more attempts to just repair it, I had to finally resort to reformatting the partition where Windows XP was installed.
FYI, my laptop has 3 partitions – drive C is for Windows; drive D is dedicated to my files for blogging, design, music and images; E for movies and games. So, when something like this happens, I only need to reformat drive C.
I deleted partition C to install Windows and I thought everything will go smoothly from there. I was wrong. After a few attempts, it gave me errors making me conclude that possibly, my hard drive was busted. But, I just couldn’t accept that. I mean, the only thing I did was to force shut down the laptop. So, I knew the problem was with my external DVD drive. I had to borrow my kumare Badeth’s DVD drive. I was right. After I reinstalled Windows using her drive, everything was a-okay again.
Whew! That really scared me! Though I was joking around saying that Corveena probably got jealous ‘cause I have my new baby with me, my new digicam Cooper (a Canon IXUS 220HS, I’ll write a review or post about him on my geek blog), I was still scared to death that the drive was indeed irreparable.
I’m a bit paranoid when it comes to backing up and saving files. So, it was really depressing when I found out I only backed up files that I needed for my computer shop on my external hard drive. *LOL* I know, I’m just laughing at the whole situation now, but when I was thinking my drive was already busted, I was fricking stressed by all the things I needed to re-do. It even came to a point when I was already looking at top Netbooks that I can afford. I mean, seriously? It was just a software issue. I knew it, but was too stressed to think straight. Hehehe.
Anyway, the lesson is back up, back up, back up!! I now backed up all the contents of my 2 partitions. I’ll also be backing them up on DVDs by the weekend. I cannot afford to be stressed like that again next time this happens or when Corveena completely crashes on me. I hope that day won’t ever come though.
Corveena’s been with me for 2 years now. She’s been really reliable, with minor problems here and there. Now, I’m having issues with the sound card. I can no longer listen to music without connecting earphones, headsets or my speakers. Her built-in webcam doesn’t work anymore. But, I’m still glad she’s okay now. Phew!
