When I was a young kid, I wanted to marry someone in the military. When all the kids my age were deciding on which toy they wanted to play with next, I was daydreaming about ending up with a husband who's in the army.
It was all because of this family who rents one of the rooms in our old house in Navotas. The head of the family was this big, strong guy who was in the military. I guess it's his authoritative presence and gentlemanliness that made me decide, at that very young age, that I wanted a soldier for a husband. Not a doctor. An army man.
But, of course, that changed when I grew older. I met a couple of women who were married to soldiers who served our country and one of them even served in Iraq when they finally moved to the USA a couple of years ago. I listened to their horror stories of waiting anxiously at home, worrying for their husbands' safety. I can only imagine how scary that must have been for them.
I became more aware of what families with military men and women go through after I've read and heard heartbreaking stories about American soldiers who were sent to Iraq. And as much as I'd like to share my sentiments on that war against Iraq, I don't want to because some people might think I'm dismissing all the struggles the soldiers went through when they were in Iraq.
I remember this friend of mine from years back who moved to the US after she married an American military guy. She told me that they were getting a lot of benefits and compensations because her husband was in the military. I thought to myself that they should get what they deserve. The days of worrying and reading through news updates on TV and on the web, like from the Military Times where they could get specific news about the latest happenings across the globe where the military is involved, should be rightfully recompensed, especially now that her husband has retired.
I wonder if she check sites like MilitaryVALoan.com to find out how much VA loan benefits they already earned. The site is pretty easy to navigate so it should be easy for anyone who needs that information to get it from this site.
Would I want to marry a soldier if in case that's coming in my future? Yes. I've actually been with a guy who's in military school a decade ago, but our relationship didn't last because he barely had time to spend with me during the critical phase of still getting to know each other. But, I've seen him online since we're friends on Facebook, and he's happy with his wife and 3 beautiful kids. I wish him a happy and safe life serving our country. :)
